Tetra Society of North America

The Tetra Society of North America has a wide network of technically skilled volunteers (mechanical and electrical engineers, trades people, architects, and other individuals skilled in design and production) who make customized devices for people with disabilities across the country. Over the years, volunteers have built over 150 devices for Surrey residents.
COVID-19 has presented significant obstacles to our program, and the population of people with disabilities that we serve. We continue to receive many Requests for Assistance (RFAs) from people with disabilities who are facing significant challenges to their independence because of social distancing and other measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These requests are for equipment and devices that help restore independence and quality of life.

The pandemic has placed many barriers in the way of these projects being completed. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tetra devices began with a meeting between volunteer and client to discuss needs and in-person meetings are an important part of every device projects. Because Tetra’s clients are part of the population that is most vulnerable to complications from the COVID-19 virus, we have adapted the way that clients and volunteers interact. Support for Tetra Society of North America will be allocated to:
• The creation of Tetra devices
• The acquisition of Personal Protective Equipment
• Enhancements to our “Virtual Coordinator” system that will allow volunteers and clients to meet virtually, instead of in person.
Ultimately we are seeking support that will allow us to continue our important work addressing environmental barriers encountered by people with disabilities, in Surrey and beyond, in all areas of their lives: at home, at work, at school, and at play.
