You Wear it Well...Just for Grads Society
The You Wear it Well…Just for Grads Society provides formal graduation attire – free of charge - for at-risk students in Surrey, Delta, and New Westminster. We provide so much more than ‘just a grad dress’ – students who attend our program are more likely to stay in school and graduate.
Students are referred to us via school personnel. Most of our students have endured hardships that make attending school difficult, and the prospect of attending graduation is a financial impossibility for them and their families. Students have diverse backgrounds; many are refugees or recent immigrants. Many are coping with multiple factors that can inhibit their chances of success in school – poverty, mental health or medical issues, family conflict, low self-esteem and learning problems, substance abuse, and trauma.
Our work culminates in “Boutique Day”, held in the Atrium at Surrey City Hall in early March each year. On this day, students are invited to choose a gown/tuxedo and accessories. They can bring a guest and are assigned a ‘Personal Assistant’ (volunteer), whose job is to make sure the student feels pampered and special throughout the day. We also provide hair styling, make up services, a buffet lunch, professional photos and alteration services, all free of charge.
We are run solely by volunteers and all donations go directly towards supporting our annual Boutique Day. Purchasing clothing and accessories to supplement our inventory, paying the venue rental fee, and hosting a light buffet lunch for the students and their guests are some of the ways donations funds are spent.
