ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Snow Rhinos Foundation BC empowers Black youth across British Columbia by removing barriers to winter sports. Through youth sponsorships, free and low cost training clinics, and mentorship, the organization provides essential gear, lift passes, and coaching to help young athletes build confidence on the slopes and pursue competitive opportunities, including pathways to the Winter Olympics. Additionally, the foundation hosts guided Black history walking tours to celebrate local heritage while raising support for its youth sports initiatives.

"What makes your organization’s work important in Surrey and area?"

At The Snow Rhinos Foundation BC, we are breaking down barriers to ensure Black youth in British Columbia have the opportunity to experience, excel in, and belong in winter sports. For many young people, the high cost of gear, lift passes, and coaching makes skiing and snowboarding completely out of reach. We change that by providing full youth sponsorships, free winter clinics, and elite mentorship that guides athletes from their very first time on the snow all the way toward Olympic pathways. Our work matters because access to the outdoors builds lifelong confidence, resilience, and community connections. By removing financial and social obstacles, we empower the next generation of youth to conquer the slopes, see themselves represented in winter sports, and thrive both on and off the mountain. Beyond the slopes, we also host community Black history walking tours to celebrate local heritage and support our youth programs.

"What programs or services do you currently offer?"

Youth Sponsorship Program: Provides full funding for Black youth to participate in winter sports, covering essential equipment, lift passes, mountain access, and coaching across British Columbia. Winter Sports Clinics and Coaching: Offers free and low cost skiing and snowboarding clinics led by experienced athletes and coaches to build foundational skills, confidence, and mountain safety. Olympic Pathways and Elite Athlete Support: Nurtures competitive talent by offering specialized coaching, high level sponsorship, and mentorship to support young Black athletes aiming for elite competition and the Winter Olympics. Youth Advocacy and Leadership Beyond the Slopes: Empowers youth beyond athletics by connecting them to broader decision making spaces, including government youth councils, sport governance roles, student unions, and immigration pathway support. Guided Black History Walking Tours: Hosts community walking tours that highlight the rich history, places, and contributions of Black communities in British Columbia, with tour proceeds supporting our youth programs.

"Who benefits from your work?"

Through our programs, several key groups benefit: Underrepresented Youth & Aspiring Athletes: Young people who gain access to equipment, lift passes, and expert coaching, allowing them to experience the mountains for the first time or develop into competitive, elite winter athletes. Emerging Youth Leaders: Black youth looking to make their mark off the slopes, who receive mentorship and advocacy support to step into influence in government youth councils, sport leadership roles, student unions, and community governance. The Broader BC Community: Local residents, newcomers, and visitors who participate in our Black history walking tours, fostering cultural preservation, education, and a stronger sense of shared heritage across the province.
