SuperChefs Cookery Society for Kids
SuperChefs Cookery for Kids is an award winning program specializing in healthy cooking classes, interactive nutrition education and physical fitness activities to promote lifelong healthy habits of behaviour. The camps are free of charge, and are targeted to marginalized families and children run in partnership with the Surrey School District SD36, the largest school district in British Columbia. The Surrey School District selects kids aged 8-12 years who may not have a chance to attend a summer camp experience. Many of the participants include single parent families, new immigrants, minorities, First Nations and children with Special Needs. SuperChefs programs have run for 13 years in the lower mainland, with support from the Federal Government (Canada Summer Job Program), major corporate partners (President’s Choice Children’s Charity, TD Bank, Dentsply Sirona, Westin Hotels and Resorts) and many community partners who share a passion for promoting a healthier generation of kids, which helps keep SuperChefs a no fee program.
SuperChefs selects junior and senior level nutrition/ dietetics students from UBC, as well as kinesiology, business, education and health science students from local universities and colleges (SFU, UBC, Trinity Western, Douglas, Fraser Valley) to serve as our nutrition specialists, physical activity coaches and camp counsellors to work with kids in the camps to promote healthy living practices. We provide full time summer paid employment for these university students during the camps for these developing professionals. SuperChefs has also adapted their program to offer children with intellectual and physical disabilities to participate in these summer camps who normally would not be able to be involved due to limited resources. The kids in this program receive one to one instruction from specially trained team members so they can experience SuperChefs as well.
