September of 2019 marked the inaugural season for the Surrey City Orchestra (SCO).

Based in the City of Surrey, the majority of the orchestra is comprised of musicians who call Surrey home. We perform a repertoire that reflects on the different cultures that make Surrey so diverse, that suits the demographic of Surrey and connects with younger audiences.

We enjoy promoting cross-cultural collaborations through music.

The mission of Surrey City Orchestra is not only to perform live music concerts for the residents of Surrey, but also to enrich the city’s cultural environment, attract tourism, and draw positive public attention that contributes to the image of the city. Having a local professional orchestra also provides the ability to attract international artists.

Our conductor and music director, Stuart Martin is one of Canada's new emerging artists. Known for conducting and producing operas in found spaces, he is determined to expand the possibilities of orchestral performances. The orchestra has performed with Grammy award-winning Ricky Kej, with the KPU chorus in Handel's Messiah.

We were recently recognized in the media for our contribution to the "virtual" City of Surrey Canada Day celebrations and we are planning to employ local musicians to create a virtual memorial concert to honour our veterans on the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2.

Surrey has the capacity to nurture young musicians through lessons, music festivals, the Surrey Youth Orchestra, and now local employment in the Surrey City Orchestra. Support for the music community at all levels means that the city can retain its artists and grow the cultural sector, rather than lose talent to other regions.

We currently do not have an orchestra home so we rely heavily on the support of individuals and businesses in our community to aid in expenses such as rental space for rehearsals and concerts, instrument rentals, and outreach programs.

COVID restrictions have totally changed the way we deliver our performances. Now more than ever we look to those individuals and businesses who recognize the value and enjoyment that music and the arts provide to our community and thank you for your ongoing funding and support.
