About Our Needs

About Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland
Since 1960, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland (Big Sisters BCLM) has been changing the course of young lives by providing supportive mentors to kids who need someone the most.
Every day, youth in our community face challenges like bullying, isolation, poverty, social anxiety, low self-esteem, and more. Our caseworkers carefully match Little Sisters with female adult mentors who help them overcome adversities, make healthy choices, and ultimately reach their full potential.
At Big Sisters, we focus on prevention versus intervention. These early years are essential in determining later outcomes, and mentoring is particularly effective with at-risk youth, girls and young children. We’re dedicated to providing multiple years of support for kids who need it most.
Our Mission
We are committed to enabling life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people.
Our Programs
We’re a volunteer-based organization that encourages community citizenship through our 3 mentoring programs:
Big Sisters Mentoring Program
The Big Sisters program is a one-to-one mentorship that has a profound impact on Little Sisters (ages 7-17). Through regular outings (once a week for 2 to 4 hours for a minimum of one year), a relationship develops between the mentor and the Little Sister that is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced caseworkers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the volunteer mentor and Little Sister.
Study Buddy Program
The Study Buddy program is a weekly one-to-one mentoring relationship that focuses on school work. For a minimum of six months, Study Buddies meet for one hour a week outside of school to work on school subjects and study skills. Little Study Buddies (ages 7-17) in this program not only improve their academics but also report a higher level of self-esteem.
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Program (Go Girls!)
Go Girls! is a group mentoring program for girls (ages 10 to 14) that promotes the benefit of an active, healthy lifestyle. With social pressures to be perfect at an all-time high, girls in this program build the tools for confidence and self-awareness during these formative years.
Commitment to Inclusivity
Big Sisters BCLM believes that every child and youth in the BC Lower Mainland who needs a mentor, should have a mentor. Our programs are open to volunteers and youth who identify as female, transgender, and non-binary. We are committed to providing safe, inclusive environments for all LGBTQA2S individuals.
Our geographical reach: Vancouver, Richmond, North & West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster, Surrey/White Rock, Delta, Tsawwassen, and Lad
