Here is the first of what we hope will be a number of posts in which we share bits and pieces from the SurreyCares Spring Forum with Dr. Meg Wheatley on March 27.

This one is not exactly pretty, and if you aren’t used to reading Twitter it might even be a bit confusing, but try to think of it as tiny little bursts of comments over a CB radio, or something like that. We’ve tidied it up to make it easier for you, taking out duplicates and such, and we reversed the order so that the tweets present in “normal life” chronological order instead of reverse order as is normal for Twitter. Like with telegraphs in the olden days, we’ve also used a few abbreviations, such as “ppl” for “people.” Mostly they should be intuitive, but if any Tweet doesn’t make sense, just ask a question about it in the comment form below, but make sure you include the Tweet number! Finally, the @name that you see in the right-most column is the identity, in Twitter parlance, of the person posting the tweet.

[Hint: You can look people up in Twitter by using this format: http://twitter.com/NAME-WITHOUT-THE-@-SIGN -- put their name in where the caps are, such as "surreycares".]

Also, be warned: the PDF is six pages long, if you decide to download and print it! But it’s chock full of great quotes and ideas as both Meg and forum participants shared their thoughts and ideas. Basically, it’s just a brain dump, but at least it’s a start!

Great crowd today! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
First up: the untapped resource of community. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Currently listening to Dr. margaret Wheatley at the Surrey Foundation Community Forum #surreycares@kevinshen
Then we'll talk about "The future lives here" and what that means for Surrey. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Meg Wheatley states Surrey's best resource is untapped: community. It is needed if "The Future Lives Here" #SurreyCares@JKageorge
The era of doing more with less: Dr Wheatley sees this globally. $ isn't solving the issues. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
$ from government isn't solving issues. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
She sees increasing conflict, fear, anxiety around the globe. 1/3 of work absences are due to nervous disorders. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Recent headline in US paper: "Is America over-regulated?" is Canada any different? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We're not solving issues as long as we don't seek solutions ourselves. Waiting for others' decisions gets us nowhere. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Solutions aren't coming from Ottawa or Victoria: they have to come from us. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
A growing need for community: A craving for a simpler, slower, more centered life, ... #Surreycares@SurreyCares
...one less consumed by the soul-emptying crush of getting & spending, runs deep w/in our culture right now." Judith Warner. #Surreycares@SurreyCares
Community, relationships as a resources, is counter-cultural. #Surreycares@SurreyCares
http://ow.ly/i/x3A4 Slide shot. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
When an old culture is dying, the new culture is born from a few ppl who are not afraid to be insecure.-Rudolf Bahro. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Comment after a disaster: "There's no risk to experimenting with solutions because this is already a disaster!" #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Walkouts are not drop-outs: they are ppl who choose to leave that which is shrinking them to walk on to a new life. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Walk out of limiting beliefs and start believing we, I, can make a difference. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
New assumptions for Leaders: ppl who are willing to seek change, not formal titles. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
231) We have what we need already. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
242) Every problem is workable, has a solution. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Everyone is an expert, no one person is the authority with The Answer. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
264) Conflict is an unavoidable consequence of being interconnected: we both care! Yes, we oppose; treat it as a good sign. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Conflict can be a place of meeting rather than a destroyer! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Interesting comments from floor abt impressions of typical org chart: hierarchical, stuck, wage disparity, assume box=brains. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Q: Where does intelligence lie? What potential in ppl if we take them out of boxes? What is ppl's true capacity? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Org charts can be overwhelming if we think abt it from perspective of wanting to control it. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Why working with community is working with life: life's basic building blocks are relationships. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"Individual" is a man-made fiction. It doesn't exist in biology: nothing living lives alone. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Who we're with, different situations bring out different elements of who we are. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Biological principle: To create health, create more connections. "Ubuntu" #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Ubuntu: A person is only a person through other people. Also means we belong in a bundle of like. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Traditional cultures understand community. Western society lives in an "optical illusion of separateness." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"Dadirri" (Australian Aboriginal): deep, respectful listening which builds community. Takes time, energy. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Senegal culture: deep poverty, but no suicides. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Ppl despair when they feel no belonging, feel alone, invisible. Want to stop suicide? Reach out and connect! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Power of a community of belonging is incalculable. Relationship is a huge resource. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
What kind of leadership supports community? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Leader type one: leader as hero, like a roman emperor, or the person who works too hard, alone, desperate. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Some ppl think it's selfish to look after oneself because too much work, too many needs. Social hero? Absurd. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
No one can solve problems by working alone, in isolation, "I know best," or "I just have to work harder." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Leader as Host: non-egoic perspective, everyone has something to contribute. Sees self as part of a team, not alone. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Think back to ppl who influenced/inspired us: they encouraged, stretched, believed in us, saw gifts in us. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
A leader is anyone who is willing to help. Lady in village who saw kids not going to school; did something abt it! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Start w/ whatever's in front of you & make difference there, then go to next stage, then next. Not strategic, but effective! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Who would we find in our community if we went looking? "Without us/me you would fail." Really?!? No one is an expert on own. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Great start to #surreycares at #sridge. It is not about charity: it is relationships that make community@DouglasRTennant
Order without control IS possible! Just need agreed-upon principles. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
RT @DouglasRTennant: Great start to #surreycares at #sridge. It is not about charity: it is relationships that make community@SurreyCares
World Cafe begins now. Question one: What did you hear that got your attention? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
If you are not here (SurreyCares community forum at Southridge School), what tweets meant something to you and why? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We have 20 minutes to discuss which ideas captured our attention this morning, got us thinking, and why/how. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Rosanna is doing a great job capturing the notes from today's community forum! http://ow.ly/i/x4eS #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
RT @JKageorge: Meg Wheatley states Surrey's best resource is untapped: community. It is needed if "The Future Lives Here" #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Getting instructions now for the next conversation. Hosts allowed to make ONE comment on first conversation. No recaps! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Question 2 for table discussion: "The future lives here" -- How is your work contributing to Surrey's future? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Online followers: How do YOU contribute to the future of Surrey already? If its true, it's not bragging! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Now we've got 25 minutes for this topic. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Diverse? Entrepreneurial? Gateway? In the future, what words will you use to describe Surrey? #SurreyCares@JKageorge
In reply to Surrey Foundation:
@SurreyCares #surreyCares ReNewton is working 2 revitalize SE Newton & bring a community/public market back to nghbrhd at KG&64 #surreybc@ReNewtonNation
Third question: from what you heard at your table, what will Surrey look like I the future? How will others describe Surrey? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Surrey is/will be neighbourly. lots of conversation. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We're hearing comments from the floor now, BTW. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Surrey is gradually becoming more engaged. Unneighbourly situations are being challenged. It's a process, keep reaching out. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
More and more, Surrey is becoming innovative, even leading the way: sustainability, youth #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"I'm very proud to be from Surrey!" #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"I was born and raised here. We are more than the sum of the many parts! One size will NEVER fit Surrey." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"Today's forum is a fire starter, and Surrey will be a better place as we all walk out of here today." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We really want neighbourly places to meet! Big isn't always better. I'm worried abt all the building going on. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
S/times all you need to do is reach out to people, find a way to connect: bake & swap, new mums, whatever! Start in backyard. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"We have amazing things in our community! Worried abt widening socioeconomic gaps." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Lunchtime! Back in 45 mins. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Breaking for lunch at #surreycares. Lots of interesting ideas about community to discuss.@DouglasRTennant
Great to meet you RT @JKageorge: Diverse? Entrepreneurial? Gateway? In the future, what words will you use to describe Surrey? #SurreyCares@Divafish
Awesome graphic facilitation RT @SurreyCares: Rosanna capturing the notes from today's community forum! http://ow.ly/i/x4eS #SurreyCares@Divafish
RT @SurreyCares: Leader type one: leader as hero, like a roman emperor, or the person who works too hard, alone, desperate. #SurreyCares@Divafish
What type of leader are you: hero or host? #SurreyCares@Divafish

In reply to Surrey Foundation:
@SurreyCares I help convey how awesome Surrey is to the rest of the region through http://ow.ly/9UMIs & http://ow.ly/9UMAQ #surreycares@rbrtwhite
Start anywhere... Follow it everywhere. Model for community lead change #SurreyCares via Margaret Wheatley@Divafish
Story abt Wangari Maathai and her community work. Google her! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"It is ppl who must save environm't. It is the ppl who must make the leaders change. And we cannot be intimidated." Mattarai #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
QotD: the ppl who must save the env.. who must make their leaders change. So we must stand up for what we believe in-Maathai #SurreyCares@Divafish
Greenbelt Movement in Kenya: powerful story/case study. Tress cut, water ruined; 5 of 7 tree plants died. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
That was 1977. By 2004, they planted 30 million trees, 600 communities, 20 nations. 2011: 5 billion trees worldwide! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Point is, start anywhere. Just start. See issue others care about, and start w/ ppl's passion. Not abt strategic planning. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Work with life, not in boxes. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Once you begin, you'll discover what's next. Follow each step as it comes up. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
What we do here and in community is not incidental to rest of life, it IS life, integral. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We learn what works by doing the work! Follow energy of "Yes!" Why do we work faster or fire ppl when idea one doesn't work? #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
We learn what works by doing the work, and always follow the energy of "yes"! #SurreyCares@kevinshen
Humpback whale breaching: 80,000 of blubber believing it can fly! (ha ha!) #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
"If you want to make God laugh, show him your plans." Another laugh! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Synchronicity: When you're doing the right work, it's amazing how the pieces seem to fall into place. (SF: Like this forum.) #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Notice something bigger going on than you can possibly explain? Keeping following that path. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Ppl support what they create, and act responsibility for what they care about. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Need to be connected to work to make a difference. Accountability? Rules? No. Create meaningful work instead. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
How to change the world in "Four Easy Steps": starts with "Some friends and I started talking..." #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
1041) Notice what you care about. Interesting comment: Issues tend to choose us. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
At the same time, if you get passionate, don't try to make everyone else care, just find others who do already. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
1062) Get started. Doesn't matter if you start "wrong"--it's called learning. Start, small? fail?; learn, keep going, get better #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Just start. (Story abt mum&2kids who started w/ 18 meals/week, now 1M meals/week.) They just started. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Mistakes are ok. Just learn from them. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
1094) Stay together. (Remember earlier, she said conflict means we both care?) #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
About to go to table topics again. Meet other people who care about something you (really) care about; start talking. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Twenty minutes for conversation now. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
What do YOU care about? Who else feels the same way? Find them and start talking. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
RT @kevinshen_: We learn what works by doing the work, and always follow the energy of "yes"! #SurreyCares@SurreyCares

RT @Divafish: Start anywhere... Follow it everywhere. Model for community lead change #SurreyCares via Margaret Wheatley@SurreyCares
Now time to seek out people who share our issues. Take turns stating personal primary issue, then seek likeminded others. #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
Issues: violence against women, ppl w/ disabilities, seniors abuse & neglect, financial literacy, mentoring for children... #SurreyCares@SurreyCares
The ideas are popping at #SurreyCares - the world's big changers start with conversations between friends@Divafish
