WHAT:

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland has been enhancing the confidence and self-esteem of girls, ages 7-17, through positive, mentoring relationships since 1960. Big Sisters provides girls who are dealing with low self-esteem, social isolation or challenging life situations with a supportive mentor who cheers them on to success.

PERSONAL STORY:

Serendipity

“When my mother first approached me about having a Big Sister I was twelve years old. My first thought was that I was too “mature” and didn’t need extra attention. I agreed to do it anyway. As it turns out, it was the best decision of my life. My Big Sister Joyanne is a vivacious woman who has a great zest for life. The mentorship that she provided me has continued for 27 years. We have done many things together like travelling, going to restaurants and plays, and nature walks, but most important were the talks, support and friendship Joyanne gave me. Her kindness and positive words were, and still are, invaluable to me. I appreciate her friendship and consider her one of the chief role models in my life. It was not luck, or design, it was meant to happen the way that it did – it was serendipity.” – Trish, Little Sister from 1983-1989

LONG-TERM IMPACT:

Having a Big Sister helps girls grow up into capable and contributing members or our communities. Research has demonstrated that a relationship with a Big Sister has a positive impact on a child including reducing a child’s risk of drug and alcohol abuse, reducing violent behaviour, improving school attendance, and improving relationships with parents1.
